Man charged with DUI manslaughter

by Administrator 14. May 2010 03:27
A 25-year-old St. Petersburg man has been charged with DUI manslaughter ten months after the death of his then-girlfriend in a drunk driving accident.

The woman was killed last July when she stuck her head out of the man's car, striking several mailboxes and suffering head injuries.

The man said the woman "was just hanging out the window, had her head out having fun and didn't see the mailboxes."

He waived his Miranda rights at the time of arrest in July, claiming he had "nothing to hide because he was not drinking or using drugs.'

Police report otherwise, with evidence that he had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 three hours after the accident. The legal limit is 0.08.

Drunk driver sentenced to three years prison

by Administrator 27. April 2010 03:53
A 20-year-old St. Petersburg woman was sentenced last Friday to three years in prison for a DUI accident last year that left her boyfriend dead.

The Thursday before, she spoke to students at Indian Rocks Christian School, warning them not to make the same mistakes she had.

Her boyfriend's parents both expressed to the judge that they did not wish her to go to prison and that they had forgiven her and thought she was doing something good by speaking to students through the Safe Teen Driving program.

The judge said that he recognized that she was sorry, but still gave her the three year sentence.

This is a very difficult issue, obviously. While the parents of the victim may not wish the woman to be sentenced, the state still has certian obligations to do so. If you or someone you know has been the victim of a drunk driver, and you are looking for legal advice on the issue, contact the St. Petersburg drunk driving accident attorneys of Beltz & Ruth, P.A., at 800-931-8106.

Drunk cab driver chased by Orlando police

by Administrator 13. April 2010 05:21

An Orlando police lieutenant observed a taxi driver shooting a handgun into the air several times before driving off at speeds in excess of 100 mph early Sunday morning. The officer pursued the mini-van taxi while calling in support from additional police units.

The taxi driver only traveled around five miles along Interstate 4 before pulling off into the parking lot of a group of apartments. When he was arrested, the driver claimed that he had been fighting with another driver named "Luis" and that the gunfire near the Church Street Station bar district had been to scare Luis. Police have been unable to verify this story, and the officer who initially saw the driver firing into the air said that there were no other taxis nearby.

When the driver refused to get out of the car, police were forced to break the driver-side window and remove him from the vehicle. A search of the taxi turned up a concealed .40-caliber Glock handgun. The driver had a blood alcohol level three times higher than the legal limit and was charged with driving under the influence, firing a gun while intoxicating, resisting arrest, and a number of other crimes.

Thankfully nobody was seriously injured during this car chase, but drunk drivers are a serious danger to other vehicles on the road.
